how to connect headphones to tv

Connecting headphones to a TV is actually a relatively straightforward process. With any of the following methods, you can listen to your TV from behind your door or next door, without disturbing anyone else in the room.

1) Connect via Headphone Jack: This is a simple connection that will allow you to use your headphones as if they were speakers for your TV. All you need is a set of headphones with an audio jack on one end and an audio plug on the other end that matches the size of the port on your TV. Plug them in and press down on the switch next to ‘Headphones’ so it turns green and vice versa when you want it back as speakers for regular viewing.

2) Purchase an RF Wireless Receiver: If you are using your headphones with a portable TV, or with a TV that was made before the advent of the 3.5mm jack, then you’ll need to purchase an RF wireless receiver. These plugs into your TV’s 3.5mm jack and picks up a frequency that transmits to the headphones. The wireless receiver allows you freedom of movement (as long as you remain in range) without having to deal with chords or wires attached to the back of your head or TV set.

3) Purchase a Bluetooth system: If you have any sort of wireless device, whether it be your TV or gaming controller then you can use Bluetooth connectivity to receive audio from the headphones. This is useful for when you want to watch TV but don’t want to disturb anyone else. To use this type of connection, you’ll need either the Sony SRS-XB10 wireless Bluetooth headphone system which has a connection between a microphone and control unit that sits on the back of the TV or another wireless device and a Bluetooth transmitter/receiver. A good alternative might be an AudioQuest DragonFly Black since it has an in-line remote with volume control.

4) Purchase a digital optical system: An optical audio out port is most commonly used for surround sound systems and will be an option on the back of your TV. This type of connection sends digital audio signals through an unbreakable cable to a set of optical headphones. For example, in the case of the CXC T-11 Docking Headphones + Digital Optical Transmitter, you’ll plug in your audio source (e.g., Cable box, CD player) into its respective port (also 3.5mm output), then plug it into the transmitter which is plugged into the optical port on your TV. After which, you can plug your headphones into the transmitter and listen to the audio as if it were coming out of speakers.

5) Purchase a wireless headphones adapter: This is one of the least expensive options and will generally be located on the back of your TV or audio source. The wireless headphone adapter allows you to wirelessly use your headphones with an audio source connected to the TV by using a wireless transmitter that fits into the jack on your audio source (e.g., RCA connectors, optical output).
